Study Group: Will this date bring romantic opportunity?

How would you respond to this woman? She's going on a coffee date and wants to know if it will lead to romance. Consider the numerical theme, and doubles. What is the situation? What do you think the 4 of Diamonds reveals as an underlying influence? How would you interpret the Queen of Hearts in the outcome position?

This was a great reading presented by one of my students.

Usually in my comments to students, I go through the reading from my perspective. Sometimes there are questions that I would ask or things I might notice that the student may not have noticed.

The first thing I noticed was the double 4s, which the student noticed as well. Double 4s in my system relates to illness. Since the 4 of Spades also relates to order disrupted or a breakdown, I wondered if there was an illness in this woman's past that kept her from dating for a while. As the 4 of Spades begins the spread, it suggests there is something that needs to be transformed before she is ready to move forward. Order disrupted could also mean that she doesn't usually date and her normal routine is being disrupted.

The 4 of Diamonds is the card of unfulfilled desires and in the 2nd position it shows that she is seeking to find something that's missing in her life. When this card appears, it means you never feel you have enough (time, energy, money, love).

The Queen of Hearts may show a future role she will play in this relationship. This shows her being the Queen of someone's heart so it's very positive in this position. Had this card showed up in the 2nd position, we might assume this guy already had a Queen at home. The numerical theme is 2 (4 + 4 + 12(3) = 20 = 2 + 0 = 2) which shows that her vibration is geared toward cooperation and sharing so she's very open to partnership right now.

The student provided this follow up to the reading: The client is now dating the very man she was asking about. You were dead on about her as she had a knee replacement and broke her arm and had four surgeries in the last year.

the bright side of spades cards

Spades represent energy blocks that prevent progress in a certain direction. They are bound to appear in your readings so it’s best to see them in their most positive light.
Over the Moon Oracle Cards are a hybrid oracle deck ~ playing cards on one side and visual oracle on the other

Rejection | Ace of Spades tells you that something in your life isn't a good fit. Now you can discover what is a good fit.

Separation | 2 of Spades tells you it's time to get distance and find your own identity.

Interference | 3 of Spades teaches you to set boundaries in unhealthy relationships.

Delay | 4 of Spades tells you that there may be disappointment today but the sun will come out tomorrow.

Conflict | 5 of Spades tells you it's best to clear the air and express your anger rather than bottling it up.

Resentment | 6 of Spades shows where you're holding on too tightly and how to release your need to control everything.

Caution | 7 of Spades speaks for itself. It shows where are you lacking clarity and need to proceed slowly.

Restriction | 8 of Spades forces you to slow down and savor each moment.

Tears | 9 of Spades helps you release the old to prepare to receive new blessings.

Loss |10 of Spades says you’ve reached a dead-end and there’s no where left to go but up.

Spread of the Month: Getting What You Want

Getting What You Want Spread

This spread helps you figure out the steps to get what you want. Before you begin this reading, it's important to have a specific goal in mind. The reading will help you to see the various choices, underlying influences and advice to follow in order to reach your goal.

Card 1 = Ideal. This card symbolizes what you hope to accomplish and what you truly want.
A Spades card here reveals what you don't want. It also shows you may be too focused on what you don't want rather than your goal. What we think about, we attract to us, so try to focus on what you want rather than what you don't want. A face card here might show a role you wish to play.

Cards 2 & 3 = Choice of action. These two cards generally show opposing choices that are available to you. Each choice may help you to reach your ideal but in different ways. Contrasting the suits and numbers will help you identify the different themes of your choices. Look at face cards here as roles or they might reveal that a person plays a significant role in your choice.

Card 4 = Underlying influences. This card reveals the main issue that lies just beneath the surface. It may show the reasons why your goal is important or people that are influencing your decision.

Card 5 = No. This card shows what you should say "no" to regarding this situation. You are being advised against the actions of this card. If it is a face card, you are being told not to take this person's advice or direction.

Card 6 = Yes. This card shows what you should say "yes" to regarding this situation. You are being advised to take the opportunity or actions represented by this card. If it is a face card, you are being told to heed this person's advice or accept their help.

Card 7 = Outcome. This card reveals the most likely outcome you can expect on your current path.

How to Perform the Reading

Cards: Use all the cards in the deck.

Focus question: How can I get ___________________________? Fill in the blank with whatever you want.

Process: Shuffle the cards and choose one card for each position of the spread. Select cards in the order shown above.

SAMPLE READING
Bill wants a new job and has a few leads. Two leads are for campus director positions at schools in different locations in the state. The director position will be a step up from his current position and will look great on his resume. He asks, "How can I get the campus director job?

I'm using my Over the Moon Oracle Cards for this reading. When I use this deck, I read primarily from the oracle side and its visual cues, and use the playing card side for additional insights.

What an interesting spread! The first 3 cards are black, the second three are red and the outcome card is a Joker. This suggests the goal has just as many obstacles to achieving it as it may have rewards. There may also be a surprise outcome or one that puts you into a brand new state of mind. There is a two of a kind with the number 2 showing a choice is necessary. The numerical theme is 5 so there may be conflicts with others as you assert your need for freedom and independence. The 5 theme also relates to breaking free from convention and the status quo.

Ideal

Here we have a Spades card in the Ideal spot. It usually shows what you don't want and suggests that this is your focus. Separation | 2 of Spades reveals there may be a separation from someone if you follow your goal and you are trying to avoid this. By focusing on this dilemma rather than focusing on your goal, you may be attracting more job opportunities that keep the two of you apart. (Bill confirmed that he had a girlfriend he didn't want to leave behind).

Choice of action

These two cards represent a choice between two different situations or actions.  Delay | 4 of Spades shows that one job lead may bring delays and disappointment. In the card, we see a little boy who has brought his toys outside to play. However, it's raining and he can't enjoy the day. Likewise, one of the job leads may be disappointing and not what you expected.

Interference | 3 of Spades reveals that with the other lead, there is interference. On a positive note, there can be someone who is acting as a matchmaker, connecting you with this second lead, like a head hunting company. In the image, an older woman seems to be making an introduction to a young boy. The boy doesn't look excited about this introduction, however. Or maybe he just needs time to warm up to the little girl. Your matchmaker may believe this job is the perfect fit for you but it may not look as promising as you hope.

Unfortunately, since each choice is represented by Spades cards, both seem to bring their share of problems.

Underlying influences

Division | 2 of Diamonds is another two showing that choices and partnerships are key to getting what you want.  This card typically relates to dividing your time and energy between two things as happens when one has to moonlight, doing two jobs at once. It can also show that something will be cut in half like a salary. This card seems to bring up the separation issue again shown in the Ideal. Visually, we can also see a potential power play or power struggle.

No

Say NO to a decrease. This most likely represents saying no to a decrease in pay, benefits or other resources or perks.  This means that if you are offered a position that seems to be a decrease in any of these perks, this is not the correct choice for you at this time. Decrease | 5 of Diamonds also shows something that depreciates in value so it's important to consider this in light of your job search. Ask yourself if the campus director position will be more work than the reward you receive and if it will really lead you to bigger and better things in the long term. Bill later confirmed that he was made an offer for one of the campus director positions that was lower than his current salary and at a school where he would be lacking the support staff to do his work effectively. He was also concerned that since the school was much smaller than his current location that it would be a step backward instead of a step forward.

Yes

As a YES card, Fantasy | 7 of Hearts advises you to pursue your wildest dreams. What is your fantasy job? What do you dream of doing? Your answer may lie beyond either one of the campus director jobs. If we look back at the numerical theme, we can see the 5 energy here. It's about breaking free from the status quo and the traditional mindset. It shows a need to think outside of the box.

Outcome

New Outlook | Little Joker shows that if you continue on this path, the outcome will be a new outlook and probably a job that you least expect. A Joker in this position brings all sorts of unexpected surprises. In this image, a young boy looks out of a window. He seems a bit surprised by what he sees. Like him, you may be surprised (hopefully pleasantly) by what you will be seeing in the near future. I also get the impression that this translates to a new opportunity opening up to you soon, possibly in a totally different location or even out of state.

yes or no? how to get your answer with the story method of interpretation

I've been reading a lot of blog posts lately about answering yes/no questions using an image-based deck like tarot. Some say it can't be done. Some say it can. Some find ways to do it by assigning cards a positive (yes) spin or a negative (no) spin.

I say if you have an image-based deck all you need to do is look at the picture and say what you see. This is the story method of interpretation. The questioner or subject of the reading becomes the main character in the image and you simply describe what's happening.

For example, what if you are asking, Will I get a promotion? Imagine that someone is getting a promotion. What do they look like? Happy, sad, angry? Imagine the scene -- What are they doing? Celebrating? Relaxing? What kind of body language would we see? Tight and tense or relaxed and open? Now, look through the cards in your deck. What cards would verify a yes answer? What cards verify no?

Let's look at examples using Over the Moon Oracle Cards. I'm using the non-captioned version of the deck so we can see the entire image clearly.

Will I pass my test?

Status | 8 of Diamonds
Look at you! You've got your feet up, chillaxin at home with your needlepoint. I'd say you passed your test.

Rejection | Ace of Spades
You are leaving a school dragging a book on the ground. This looks more like a walk of shame than a victory march so I would say NO you don't pass the test.

Forgiveness | 6 of Hearts

Yes, you will pass the test but with a little help, maybe a tutor or study aid. Or perhaps some help from above -- divine help -- in the form of prayer!

Will my finances improve by next month?

Empty | 4 of Diamonds
You're starving! You've got no money for food so you've resorted to eating plates! It doesn't look good financially.

Fun | 5 of Hearts
You're playing and having fun, without a care in the world, so yes it looks like your finances improve.

Waiting | 2 of Clubs
You are waiting for something, perhaps a check in the mail. It looks like things will still be tense on the financial horizon but you may be in a position of expecting money.

Will I get a new job soon?

Gift | 6 of Diamonds
You are giving or receiving money. Either way, this is a good sign. It looks like you may receive a job offer or at least have enough extra money to hold you over.

Traveler | Jack of Clubs

You're getting out of the house and looking for a job. It could also mean that you will get a job that will require you to travel or move.

Security | Ace of Diamonds
You're sitting at home by the fireplace, so no job.

Does he like me?

Interference | 3 of Spades

Since the question is does HE like me we'll focus on the male in the image. He appears annoyed at being set up. But perhaps once he gets to know you better, he'll warm up to you.

Romantic| Jack of Hearts
He definitely likes you. He's trying to win you over.

Restriction | 8 of Spades
He is more concerned with his own predicament than a relationship right now. I'd say he's just not that into you.

What if the question is posed negatively instead of positively as in the above examples? This is one of the reasons the story method works so well. If we had randomly assigned yes and no for each card, how would we interpret positive cards in a negatively worded question like the ones below?

Is my boyfriend cheating?

Commitment | 4 of Hearts
No, you two are like an old married couple and he still only has eyes for you.

Troublemaker | Jack of Spades

Well, he looks like he stole something and is trying not to get caught. So, I would say yes, he's probably cheating.

Delay | 4 of Spades

He may not be cheating but he appears disappointed with the relationship. He's not having any fun.
Is the relationship over?

Partnership | 2 of Hearts
You two are still infatuated with each other. Look at the close body language -- I'd say no, the relationship is not over.

Loss | 10 of Spades
Unfortunately, yes. Like Humpty Dumpty, it's fallen and it can't get up. As the story goes, no one can put Humpty Dumpty (or the relationship) back together again.

Rest | 4 of Clubs
Maybe, but this might just be a time out period where both of you need a break from each other.

Do you use this method of interpretation?

the deck interview

This is a spread used to "interview" your new deck. It's a great way to find out its potential.

What will you offer?

Traveler | Jack of Clubs is the same card I got in my first reading. Perhaps this deck will offer new adventures, a way for people to get from here to there, and discover where they are headed.

What will you help us discover about ourselves?

Maybe we will gain wisdom and a wealth of knowledge like the gentleman in the Owner | King of Diamonds who carries books under his arm. The card keyword suggests this deck will help us take ownership of our issues.

What type of readings will you excel at?

Friendship | 3 of Hearts shows relationship readings of all kinds. Any type of reading that helps connect you with someone else.

What should I do to collaborate with you?

Hmmm, when I saw Widow | Queen of Spades, I was tempted to pull another. Instead, I sat with it and did a story method of interpreting. The question is asking what to do so I need to focus on what the woman is doing not how she's feeling. She's holding keys. To collaborate with the deck, I need to "hold the keys" or be the key to decoding the deck and helping people work with the deck.

What is the potential outcome of our working relationship?

I definitely didn't want to see Delay | 4 of Spades here. It relates to delays, disappointment, and a disruption of plans. What you expect to happen will not happen as planned. Perhaps my vision for the way I'll work with the deck will not be how it's actually used.

How would you interpret these cards in these positions?
